About the band
The Cal State University Bakersfield Community Concert Band consists of
students, music educators, and community members from all walks of life. The
bond that holds them together is the love of music, along with the dedication they
share for their group and their director. If you happen to pass by the music building
on campus between 7:00-9:30 P.M. on Tuesday evenings you will here the sound of
the band working and polishing their songs for your enjoyment (and theirs). For
many of the members in this group, this is a time for them to work towards a
common goal and have fun doing it!

Our tribute to Dr. Gordon Mehling, CSUB Community Band Director
1995-2003
Doug Davis (b. 1948) graduated summa cum laude from the University of Tennessee where
he studied with
Knoxville symphony conductor and former member of the Chicago
Symphony David Van Vactor and completed his Ph.D. from Harvard University working with
composers
Earl Kim and Leon Kirchner and composer/conductor James Yannatos.  At
Harvard, he was selected by
Leonard Bernstein to be the student member of the Norton
Lectures Discussion Group.  International performances include "Psalm of an Orange
Angel" by the Hungarian Symphony (2008 Indianapolis Orchestra Composition winner) and
"Token" for voice and orchestra featured at the Ukranian "Contrasts" festival (both recorded
on CRS).  In 2005, the
Society of Composers selected "Family Portraits" for its recording of
contemporary song cycles (released on Capstone).  Several of his compositions have been
recorded by jazz greats including
Chick Corea, Larry Coryell, and Bennie Wallace.  His
experience conducting includes the University of Tennessee Concert Band and Orchestra,
Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra, Bakersfield Youth Symphony, California All-State Collegiate
Jazz Ensemble, and
CSUB Community Concert Band.  Davis is presently the chairman of
the
Music Department at California State University, Bakersfield.  He is the Director of the
Bakersfield Jazz Festival, Legends of Jazz series, and the CSUB Guest Composers series.
In 2003,
he received the WANG award, selected from the faculty of the entire 23 campuses
of the
California State University system.  Monies received from this award now endow a
scholarship dedicated to the creation and performance of new music.
